The Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program returns in 2022 for a six-day residential program in Brisbane.

The Program is the flagship component of the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Strategy and provides an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders to come together. These young people will strengthen leadership skills and build their capacity to drive change in their local communities.

The program is open to young people aged 18 – 25 years but participants must have received all required COVID-19 vaccinations or have an approved recorded medical contraindication. 

Since beginning in 2004, more than 630 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have participated in the program with many returning as mentors and facilitators.

The 2022 program takes place 25 – 30 June 2022 and applications are now open. Successful applicants are provided with all travel, meals and accommodation. 

About the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program

Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program participants will develop their leadership and self-development skills so that they have the tools needed to create and lead their own community projects. The program includes:

  • Intensive leadership workshops facilitated by Indigenous community leaders and experts
  • Mentoring and networking opportunities with politicians, respected elders and community leaders from Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and Queensland Government representatives
  • Guidance on how to write a Community Project Proposal.
  • Career development opportunities with links to employment opportunities, alumni development program, and access to ongoing mentoring and training.

The program culminates in the one-day Eric Deeral Indigenous Youth Parliament delivered by the Queensland Parliamentary Services, providing participants with an opportunity to grow their understanding of parliament processes and experience parliament first-hand delivering speeches in the chambers.
